Psychosynthesis Psychology was
developed by Roberto Assagioli, an Italian psychiatrist. He spoke
many languages fluently, and studied in depth both Eastern and Western
religions. Although his roots were in Psychoanalysis, his dissatisfaction
with it, led him to look deeper into the essential nature of man.
Drawing upon visionary thinkers, philosophers and psychologists he
was in close contact with, he created Psychosynthesis.
Psychosynthesis is a developmental approach where the focus is on integration
of the various parts of an individual's personality, so that the person
can live and function in ways that are more meaningful and authentic.
It differs from other therapies in that it recognises that the process
of integration is guided by a relationship to a deeper self. This connection
to our deeper self can become disrupted as a consequence of wounding.
Defences, compensations and addictions can develop, preventing the individual
from living a creative and meaningful life, with purpose and direction.
It is within this context that Psychosynthesis endeavours to address the
destructive and negative elements of the personality, whilst respecting
and accepting that it is essentially the will of the Self that is seeking
expression.
